GHASEP (Ghana Schools Exchange Programme)

Questions

GHASEP (Ghana Schools Exchange Programme) is an international organization setup to provide intercultural learning opportunities to help children of Ghanaians living in the Diaspora to connect with Ghana and experience the rich Ghanaian culture via a stay in a reputable high school in Ghana.

Schools have been selected based on their proximity to each other and closeness to the places of interest that will be visited. This has been done to make coordination, supervision and management simpler.

For now, children can only apply to one of the listed schools. As the programme expands in future, other schools will be considered.

Parents will apply directly to the Ghana High Commission for visas for their children. GHASEP will provide support where required. Once the air fare is confirmed, parents will be given a deadline to make the payment to GHASEP so GHASEP can purchase the tickets as group travel from the airline.

In addition to the cost of the air fare, the following costs will be borne by parents.

  • Cost of travel within Ghana
  • Entrance fee for Attractions (Visits to places of interest- castles etc)
  • School Fees to the host school (Boarding, feeding and uniform for one week stay)
  • Administrative Charge
  • Adult Supervision (Travel from UK to Ghana and back, stay in Ghana)
  • The costs of the above will be confirmed closer to the time

We anticipate the above costs will amount to £500.00 per child

A dedicated member of staff in the host school will be responsible for overseeing the welfare of each child. Each child will also be paired with a school prefect who will be their buddy. Your child will receive first hand support from the prefect, and they will spend most of the time together. A Ghasep rep will also do a regular call in with the child to ensure they are cared for.

Your child will have full protection from any unexpected bullying as the prefect and dedicated member of staff will always be on hand to help. The host schools have also educated their students to desist from such practices.

We have worked with the schools to ensure that the welfare facilities that will be used by your child are in very good condition. All the facilities have been inspected by GHASEP. A GHASEP team member will also be available during the visit to ensure the facilities are fit for use.

Arrangements have been made with the University of Cape-Coast Hospital to attend to any child who falls sick and will need immediate medical attention.

We do not foresee your child needing any money during the visit once the associated costs have been paid. However, a maximum of £50.00 (cedi equivalent) pocket money should suffice in case it becomes necessary to buy something. You may also give your child money to buy some souvenirs from Ghana but that is at the discretion of each parent.

Your child will be given two sets of school uniform during their stay which will be sufficient for their stay. We recommend they take with them:

  • Bath Towel
  • Sponge
  • Toothpaste & Brush
  • One single fitted sheet and pillow cover
  • One sleeping cloth
  • A pair of sandals
  • A pair of snickers
  • Underwears
  • Pyjamas

Your child can communicate with you using the phone of the dedicated member of staff in the host school.
